What is Digital Signature Certificates?

Digital Signature Certificates (DSC) is a secure digital key which contains your name, email, country and your public key in electronic format.
Certificates is issued to an individual as identity proof by a Certifying Authority (CA) to sign certain documents digitally to access information or services electronically. The DSCs are typically issued with one-year validity and two-year validity. These are renewable on expiry of the period of initial issue. It can also be revoked before the expiry. These Certificates (DSC) can be downloaded as soft token to use it from local machine and USB token to use it from multiple machines. A person can get more than one DSC at a time for use at different places.

Classes of Digital Signature Certificate

Class 0 Certificate

The certificate is issued for Demonstration /  test purpose

Class 1 Certificate

This certificate is  issued to the individual / private subscribers. Certifying authorised database contain and confirms the user’s name and email address from an unambiguous subject

Class 2 Certificate

This certificate is issued for use of both the business personnel and the private individuals. Individuals who signed the manual documents while filing returns with the ROC. The class 2 certificate is mandatory

Class 3 Certificate

This certificate is issued to both individuals and organisations. This certificate is used for online participation/bidding in e-auctions and online tenders anywhere in India.

Why Digital Signature Certificate is required?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) authenticates your identity electronically. It also provides you with a high level of security for your online transactions by ensuring absolute privacy of the information exchanged using a Digital Signature. You can use certificates to encrypt information such that only the intended recipient can read it. Also, you can digitally sign information to assure the recipient that it has not been changed in transit, and also verify your identity as the sender of the message. 

A digital signature certificate is an electronic authenticity of person’s identity. DSC grants high security with absolute privacy of the information to the certified individual. The intended recipient is only one to study about the sign/encrypt information of the certificate. The digital signature provides benefit to the user that the information of the individual cannot be changed by a third party. DSC certifies the user identity as a sender of the message. Everyone has their own issued certificate so they cannot use other certificate it is illegal in the eyes of law.

What is a Certifying Authority (CA)?

Digital signature is issued by licensed certifying authority. Certifying authority is a person who grants a license to issue a digital signature certificate under the Indian Information Technology Act, 2000. A Certifying Authority is a trusted agency whose central responsibility is to issue, revoke, renew and provide directories for Digital Signature Certificates. The applicant can directly approach Certifying Authority along with original documents and self- attached copies.    

According to Section 24 of the Information Technology Act 2000, “Certifying Authority” means a person who has been granted a license to issue Digital Signature Certificates. A Certifying Authority is a trusted agency whose central responsibility is to issue, revoke, renew and provide directories for Digital Signature Certificates. Licensed CA are SafeScrypt (Sify Technologies Limited.), e-Mudhra,IDRBT, (n) Code solution, CDAC, NSDL e Gov, Capricorn Identity service, Verasys(VSign), Indian Air Force.

Yes, it is must associate DSC on MCA portal or GSTN portal before using it for signing and authenticating any return or form. Once DSC is associated on relevant platforms, it is valid till expiry of the DSC or unless and until same is updated with other DSC.
